We moved into our place in late 2019, purchased all new appliances and so far we are on our 2nd dishwasher, our 2nd dryer and our 3rd washing machine. We started out with all Bosch (German made variants) and the washing machine heat pump gave up just outside of warranty... got it repaired for $400 and then 2 weeks later the barrel of the machine is spinning like a lazy hula hoop. The repair mob said they only come out to site once and we'd have to bring the machine to them for further repairs. Decided to cut our losses as transporting the thing was not possible and there was no indication of what the cost of repairs would even be. So that was annoying but surely an anomaly. Then the LG washer that we replaced that with had to be repaired, within warranty, a few months into having it. It had a defect that made it incredibly noisy. 2 years later and just out of warranty its leaking and throwing up several error codes. I learnt my lesson and had purchased extended warranty so it was repaired. It worked for 3 days before it started doing the same thing again. Repair mob came back out and said they cant fix it- landfill. Extended warranty paid out the value of the machine for us to get a replacement. We'll see how #3 goes. Dishwasher, also German Bosch, died, paid to get it repaired, worked for a week and started flooding itself again. No indication that the problem could be fixed- landfill. The Bosch dryer, hasnt dried clothes properly for years (unless it takes 6 hours), have paid for a service on it, still no improvement- soon to be landfill. Large Samsung tv, also landfill. Two smaller Samsung tvs in a row- had faults and ended up being replaced with a Sony- presumably when the store took the two Samsungs back they ended up in landfill. Is this normal these days?? Its quite confronting to think of all these large objects just having to be discarded in such a short timeframe. I feel like my parents had an old beater of a washing machine that went into its teens yet we cant get more than 3 years!

Hi! Please help, because I am at a loss for solutions. I recently moved in with my partner, and for some reason, some of my whites turn grey in her washing machine (Bosch EcoSilence Drive Serie 2). I don't mix whites with other colors and use white laundry detergent. Sometimes it will happen that entire socks get a grey-like wash over them, but other times it will happen that certain parts of my clothes turn a dark grey (as seen in the pictures, the bra used to be completely white, and the unicorns on the socks used to be white too!) I know it might be because of certain materials used in clothing, but 1) this then still isn't supposed to happen, and 2) this never happened with any other washing machine that I've had (which is like 3). What I have done so far: \- Multiple cleaning cycles, with a dishwasher tablet or soda and/or vinegar, all at 90° \- Cleaned the inside of the washing machine, including the rubbers \- Cleaned the basket where you put I thought it might also be because she needs to wash her black kitchen work pants (she's a chef), but she washes them at like 30° for 30 mins. According to the internet, this is too cold and too short for the washing machine to really get rid of all the oils and fats that get stained in her pants, but also of the black color that's in them. So now everytime she washes her pants, I make sure to do a cleaning cycle with soda at 90° so I feel like we've covered this base? Please help, my clothes are getting ruined :(

My AEG washing machine has been going for over 15 years and is holding strong. Rest of my kitchen is all AEG and 11 years old.

There are a lot of questions about laundering synthetic fur so I thought I would share my most recent experience. I bought a dry clean-only polyester hat secondhand ([this one](https://www.helenmoore.com/collections/hats-and-huffs/products/faux-fur-pillbox-hat-1?variant=56464765223296)). It is quite a realistic fabric, with a fleecy underlayer and a longer 'hair' layer. It was in as-new condition except that the 'sheared fur' lining was stained with orangey make up in a couple of places. I have laundered synthetic fur in the past with mixed results, so I knew I had to be extra cautious with this. Dry cleaning would have cost more than the hat itself, so I decided to chance washing. My first step was to turn the hat inside out and sponge plenty of liquid detergent (Miele UltraColor) into the stains. After leaving it for 30 mins or so, I machine washed at 30C on a wool cycle (so that agitation would be minimal), leaving the hat inside out. I turned it right side out to air dry. As you can see from the above photo, the result is good but not perfect. The stains have gone, but the fleecy layer has clumped a little, like a pet in need of grooming. I have seen worse clumping than this in some of my earlier experiments, so I think that being able to turn the hat inside out saved it from worse damage. (The fur is not as uneven as it looks, it's just that the hat is sagging with only my hand in it). However I don't think the clumping is that obvious, so the hat is now completely wearable. Success!

Loving our Miele washer / dryer. It’s plenty big enough for a family of two. An unexpected bonus is that our clothes get way cleaner than they used to. We’re only two years in with them but no reliability concerns yet. They seem rather solid. Heat pump dryer is really cool. Dries well and doesn’t require a vent. You save electricity both because the dryer is more efficient but also because the dryer isn’t pulling outside air into the house.

Before redyeing, consider a high-dose cellulase rehab. Miele Cotton Repair capsules are the easiest. You run a long hot (but not extra-hot/sanitize) load and it washes off the fuzz. This can substantially improve darkness perception on cottons.

My parents had their entire kitchen kitted out in Electrolux and whirpool for over 30 years now and all of them still work without any issues whatsoever (in a very different story to Bosch or Samsung equivalents other family members bought). I finally coerced my grandma into getting her a dishwasher so needless to say I want to get her something from EU. Are Electrolux still a good choice or did they fall off over the years? What European made/owned home appliance brands would you recommend?

In my previous apartment, I used an Electrolux induction hob for 11 years and it worked without any issues. In our new space, we got a very similar model from IKEA (rebranded Electrolux), and it has been faultless for the past 3 years.

Speed queen is the standard for long lasting, but I've seen a hundred times that they are also hard on clothes so the machine will last forever, but your clothes won't. I had to go through this recently with our washer and in the end I went for an Electrolux front load washer (old dryer is still fine), it's very nice, but also pretty simple in many ways so it should last a long time. Outside of SQ, that seemed like the best option for BIFL from my research. Also, it was barely half the price of the cheapest SQ so even if it lasts half as long I'm good.

Today's major appliances generally last 7 to 10 years. Maytag is not the product it used to be. LG is good as long as you have a servicer in your area that can get parts and knows how to repair the product. Speed Queen is higher quality than most laundry brands but you pay more for it. Some Speed Queen products have a 5 year warranty. I've been in the appliance business for over 50 years. I would only purchase an appliance from an independent retailer who offers service and has competitive pricing. Box stores have changed their policies and once they sell you an appliance you have a week to 30 days to get any issues taken care of, then you are on your own for service. Electrolux is a good product in front loading laundry, but again, make sure the dealer you buy if from offers service.

Update: Thanks for all the suggestions! After reading the comments and doing some more digging, I decided to go with one of the [**dishwashers from Samsung**](https://reddit-out.link/samsung-dishwasher) because they had a lot of options that fit my budget and had the third rack my wife wanted. We ended up with one that has the StormWash feature and it has been great so far. It actually gets all the dried on stuff off without us having to pre-rinse everything in the sink first. Plus it is way quieter than our old Whirlpool, which is huge since our living room is right there. Note: I may earn a small commission from the link above. Our dishwasher died after 12 years and we're shopping for a replacement. The old one was a mid-range Whirlpool that worked great until it didn't. Now I'm looking at options under 800 bucks and reviews are all over the place. My wife insists on a third rack for utensils which limits options. I just want something that cleans dried on food without pre-rinsing everything because that defeats the purpose of having a dishwasher. Noise level matters since our kitchen is open to the living room. Energy efficiency would be nice but honestly I care more about it actually working well. Some people swear Bosch is worth the extra money, others say American brands are just as good and easier to get parts for when they break. For people who've bought dishwashers recently, is Bosch really that much better or is it brand hype? And what features actually matter for cleaning performance vs what's just nice to have extras?

I pulled the filter and it was clean. I used afresh tabs because I had them, but I will try citric acid moving forward. I just read on another thread that suds means there's something reacting or breaking down. There was a lot of suds in my wash cycle. Edit: Whirlpool Afresh tabs were used.

Since OP mentioned they also use the Normal cycle, I'd like to add that I noticed my new (Whirlpool) top loader does a spray rinse for that cycle as well, and I personally avoid using it without an extra rinse. Side note: Downy Rinse & Refresh is not a fabric softener, it's a citric acid rinse which helps remove residue from clothes. It's a pretty great product!

We need to replace our four-year-old Maytag washer (MVW6230HW1) which is the worst purchase we've made so far. We've replaced every appliance in our home over the last seven years. Everytime one needs replaced I research, compare, and I never feel confident in our purchase. There's no brand I can trust and for every good review there's a bad one. It feels like I need to buy with expectations of getting maybe five years out of it. I don't care about fancy settings, the plain dials would be great but those with larger capacity fall into the brands I want to avoid. I've been happy with front load or top load. Top load has given me more problems overall. Maytag is out as an option given the experience, and makes me hesitate on Whirlpool. Speed queen is out. My dad's 2010 Frigidaire front load set has never needed service and runs great to this day. Any thoughts on this brand? Seems like anything made since 2020 is junk regardless of brand. LG is a contender, though I read about so many people having issues here I'm hesitant. However, we have the ever dreaded LG fridge that's five years old and has never given us a problem, but we're at the five year mark so that'll probably change soon. Finally, where should we buy from? We've honestly just used big box stores because appliance stores around here all seem so sketchy. Is Costco a good option? Best Buy?

My default recommendation will always be an LG front loader with a boost heater. Affordable, effective, excellent service histories, swept the Consumer Reports testing. The door "rest" position (closed but not sealed) is enough for the machine freshness. The boost heater makes machine cleaning cycles substantially more effective. Even if you never use it for any other cycle, it's worth it for that alone. I would also consider GE and Electrolux models in that same price class, with boost heaters. The GE models with a fan for machine freshness are potentially something attractive for you if the door needs to be closed-closed at all times.

LG’s mid tier stuff is works very well without going insane on price. Samsung is another reliable option. Both have great spin speed and smart features without being overcomplicated. Front load vs top load really depends on your space and habits. Front load saves a bit on water and is gentler but can get smelly if you leave the door closed. Top load is faster to load/unload though a bit rougher on clothes. One little hack install a little [shelving unit](https://ScopeHive.github.io/ventryx/?q=2DB51B1434) above. It makes folding and sorting so much less painful.

You GUYS. I bought a Samsung washer/dryer and due to this sub I just cancelled its delivery tomorrow. Apparently everybody hates samsung. So, what do I buy? And if you are going to tell me you didn't like a brand, PLEASE SAY WHY. Things I took into account: \- gentleness on clothes while getting them sufficiently clean (people seem to like the turbo wash cycle) \- it's energy star certified which is important to my husband \- more efficient in terms of water usage \- I'm still nervous about maintaining the gasket since I've been burned with my current washer, but this LG model has a magnet that will keep the door ajar even after you've aired it out, which I like since my washing machine is in an active pathway. It also has a drain filter at the front which I can empty. I guess I'm just going to be the best front-loader-owner in terms of keeping it clean.

I would not suggest the bldc ones just yet. A good quality normal fan isn't too power consuming. Bldc ones aren't too reliable and cost a lot of money to buy and repair. Buy faber chimneys. Fk has good sale on them rn. For the rest, just buy not too smart versions of Samsung or LG. The German brands are history and service is horrible. The Koreans are still good for now.

Front loader LG or speed queen or Electrolux, top loader Speed Queen or LG\* \*only get a top loading washer with an agitator in it

Long story short: are the new model LG top load washer/dryers absolutely terrible? Like made within the last 1-2 years? Long story long: we closed on our house 2.5 weeks ago and the dryer broke. I also hate the washer with a burning passion so we are replacing both. When the appliance repair guy was here he said if we did decide to replace, don’t get Samsung obviously, but not to get LG saying the newer LGs, and anything labeled inverter, fail constantly, especially the fridges. I just purchased a new LG fridge and range of course 😅 So I’m researching what unit to get and I look into Maytag. Apparently now bought out by Whirlpool and now pure garbage. Okay. Whirlpool is rated eh. Okay. GE Profile expensive, 50/50 reviews. Speed Queen also mixed reviews, very expensive, keep on heavy duty cyle as nothing else works…got it..? I research further into brands and LG is at the top of most review lists…I personally had an LG and LOVED it, but that was like 6 years ago and it appears things have changed. Important requirement: easy & cheap to repair — spare parts should be available and the drum/bearing or motor should be replaceable separately without having to buy an entire drum assembly. I’m fine paying a higher upfront cost for a reliable, serviceable machine. If you want to BIFL, buy a fronr loading one. We've had good experience with Bosch and IFB. I prefer Bosch though. Can't go wrong with Panasonic either imo

I would specify an LG or Electrolux front loader. They're durable machines.

I usually do 5 rinse cycles, my front loader is Panasonic brand and I once sat down and watched the machine go for a solid 1.5h 😅 The leftover suds aren't irritating my skin, i guess I'll just keep going with NANOX and observe. The old detergent residue has to be on the fabrics themselves right? Since I've flushed the drum so thoroughly (13 times has got to be a record) Am I supposed to do tub clean weekly? I've been doing it monthly (i set a calendar reminder for once a month) 😅

I ended up in this subreddit while doing some research on laundry detergents. My husband had some skin issues that I suspected were from laundry detergent. After taking all the advice from here and completely overhauling how we do laundry, not only are his skin issues gone, we also got an unexpected bonus — he has waaay less B.O.!! I’m guessing our previous way of doing laundry left some residue on clothes that caused him to stink more. I just wanted to go on here to say thanks and how awesome this subreddit is!! Edit: people asking for old vs new protocols so here they are: Some info: We have a samsung top loader, and our water is very soft. Old protocol: liquid tide or kirkland liquid detergent. Filled to 3rd line for medium loads, 5th line for large loads. Washed on warm for colors; hot for whites, towels, bedding, etc. We always use the heavy soil setting. Rinse twice. A cycle took about 1.5hrs. Everything except towels dried in the dryer on medium-low with 2-3 bounce dryer sheets. Towels dried on high with no dryer sheets. New protocol: For whites/lights we use biz powder + tide clean and gentle powder. About a tablespoon of biz per load and tide powder to line 1 for smaller loads, line 2 for large or extra grimy loads. For darks, we’ve been using mrs. meyers liquid detergent in the basil scent (1-1.5oz)+ 1 tablespoon of active enzyme laundry booster (I just ordered Febu!). Whites, towels, bedding, etc washed with hot water, and warm for everything else. We use a downy ball with citric acid in every wash (about 1-1.5 teaspoons citric acid with a little bit of water). We always use the heavy soil cycle and add the pre-soak function which adds another 20 mins to the cycle. Rinse 3x. Cycle takes about 2.5hrs. Everything except towels dried in the dryer at medium-low with wool dryer balls. Towels dried on high with the wool balls.

It is time for a new fridge. I realize that this isn't literally a 'for life' purchase, but I highly value appliances that don't need service calls more than once or twice a decade and that can be repaired affordably without replacing a $600 motherboard. (You aren't getting my 1990's Kenmore washing machine away from me!) We want an icemaker, but we are willing to forgo the in-door dispenser to limit the moving parts that might cause problems. Bonus points for having a water filter that is not locked to name-brand replacements. Any other tips? Brands to choose or avoid? (I already have a prejudice against phone brands for major appliances. Looking at you, Samsung!) I am generally a fan of Costco. They now carry Midea brand fridges, but I don't know much about them. I am particularly interested in your thoughts there. The consensus seems to be that LG is very good as long as you get a rotary compressor and not a linear one, which are bad enough to have inspired multiple lawsuits. It has an ice maker but not dispenser, and a filtered water dispensed inside. (I personally would not have chosen that feature, and might have omitted the ice maker as well, but my husband is worried that he would take up drinking sodas again if cold filtered water wasn't extremely convenient, and the health costs associated with that habit are too great to risk.) The review also recommends a very similar Maytag MRFF4236RZ that was $100 more and too deep for our space, and a GE GNE27JYMFS that was cheaper but requires RFID chipped water filters, which I despise on principle. Fingers crossed that it proves a decent choice.

So my new washing machine wasn’t washing properly - it’s a front loader Siemens. I was wracking my mind trying to figure out what it was, going through all the cycles etc, but the detergent wasn’t washing out properly. I did extra rinses, ended up running a complete new rinse cycle every time I washed something and was about to send it back. I thought maybe things had changed dramatically since my last washing machine (also a Siemens) from about 7 years ago and that it was just the worst type of enshittification. Honestly it was driving me mad. There was also loads of gunk appearing on the seal which has never happened to me before in 30+ years of owning a washing machine. Anyway, after much searching and whatnot, I tried a washing pod in the machine instead of powder and saw that the pod was left in the front part of the door seal partially undissolved. Ended up searching some more and found that the machine was maybe not getting enough water, if this was what was happening, so looked when it was running and sure enough not enough water was in the drum. Internet search then suggested checking the water connection and sure enough the installation crew had only turned the tap on half way! I turned it on fully, ran a drum cleaning cycle to get all the gunk out and it’s fine now. So check your tap connections after installation! I was so annoyed as it did ruin a couple of pieces of clothing as well during this phase (over agitation without enough water). Hopefully this will help someone else who searches on this topic.

Hi Everyone, I've always had trouble putting the right amount of detergent in for the specific load. so I bought an "Automatic Dosing" washing machine (Siemens iQ500 i-Dos). How it works is incredibly simple: you set the base dose for a medium load as per your detergent instructions. You only have to do this once when you get the machine and then you can forget about it. The machine takes control from there, weighing each load and calculating the exact milliliters needed. What do you think? Our good old friend from Siemens left us after 5 years (it was a gift from grand mother so we don’t know how old it was) and we are looking for a good replacement. We want something simple to use (no need of wifi, too many programs, caps dosing) The two final contendents: Miele W1 WWA 120 WCS at 799€ Vs Bosch Series 6 WGG244ZMFG at 549€ Durability and quality wise, is 250€ more for the Miele worth it? AC - Mitsubishi Heavy - expensive but will last a life time. Otherwise Carrier, I General or Hitachi are top tier. I have all 3 and still running strong for more than a decade. Washing Machine - Top Load LG going on for more than 8 yrs no issues Fridge - LG more than 15 years. No issues Mixer - Sujata - buy it and forget about it. The jars I have change couple of times but the mixer is more than 20 yrs I think. Microwave- Samsung. Going strong for more than a decade TV - Samsung - again 8 yr old LED Vacuum - Eureka Forbes - more than a decade old RO - Eureka Forbes - 8 Yrs old

Not necessarily. But you have to be extremely deliberate with your selections. Go with brands known for reliability. In electronics I buy brands like Sony or Panasonic. Every Sony or Panasonic television that I have ever bought is still operating perfectly 10+ years later. I gave away one of the older flat screen Sony televisions to a friend who is still using it. For major appliances, buy brands for reliability, but also buy the simplest design possible. The more complex the design and features, the more likely that something will go wrong. I avoid digital displays and digital interfaces like the plague. Plain buttons and dials are the way to go. My fridge is a two-decade-old Subzero that I found on Craigslist at 10 years old. The dryer is an old Maytag. I had to replace the washer two years ago and bought the simplest commercial-grade Speed Queen I could find. I expect that to go 20 years. The vacuum is a 20-year-old Kirby built like a tank. Simple designs are best. And a lot of the “energy efficient” features built in add complexity that leads to failures. I buy quality and simplicity (the latter lowers the price), and the appliances last a long time.

IFB, been using this since 1992 in my two residences. Go for the simplest front loading model with mechanical switches, not digital. This was told by their own service guy. Service is quick and my main machines get 1 load a day, sometimes 2 loads. Make sure the machine is level. Keep filters clean and use the minimum amount of the proper detergent

SOLVED What is it, what would need to be fixed. It was all over the front, recently cleaned it with paint thinner and this is how it looks after a day. I'm assuming the springs are also gone because the drum shakes vigorously and moves the Machine at high rpm, could it be somehow related. The machine is an IFB (Indian brand) Elena Aqua Steam 6KG front-load washing machine. Location: India. SOLVED by u/XGempler Melting PCB coating. Two links describing the issue… One of these links includes a DIY repair that involves cleaning the board and coating it with hot glue, but that seems sketchy to me as hot glue has a pretty low melting point. A new board is likely the only real solution but may not be economical, particularly if the machine is old. If you want to BIFL, buy a fronr loading one. We've had good experience with Bosch and IFB. I prefer Bosch though. Can't go wrong with Panasonic either imo

Honestly I’d skip Samsung for washers/dryers. Lots of tech but way too many reliability complaints and expensive repairs. GE is a bit better but Speed Queen is pretty much the gold standard for reliability and longevity (they’re built like tanks and last 15+ years). Downside is they’re more expensive and don’t have all the fancy features but you rarely hear about major breakdowns. If that’s out of budget, Whirlpool and Maytag are also solid choices. Easier to get parts and service, and they generally hold up well for 8-10 years if you stick to their basic models. Front loaders usually clean better and are gentler on clothes, but good top loaders like GE or Whirlpool are still a safe bet. LG currently has one of the worst reputations for parts supply and repairability. Samsung is almost as bad. And if you read what Consumer Reports says about their good reliability, they also note that buyers of both makers report big problems when they need repair. The biggest issue seems to be that (in many areas) you can't even get an appointment. This is the situation here in upstate NY. LG and Samsung have not built up their national repair program. Yes, both offer clear savings over domestic brands, but keep in mind that Sam and LG chose not to build out a good national repair system. They rely on existing techs who get paid more by other companies warranty policies. Lord help you if the LG or Sam washer is out of warranty. You are the lowest priority... you'll see them in 3 weeks. Hello laundromat. The other imitations you cite about top loaders could be said about front loaders today. They will die if overloaded, they are made out of plastic parts, and come with a short 1 year warranty. Our old Speed Queen couldn't care less if you overload it. It was designed to not break if you did. With a SQ clothes don't get as clean if you overload, but overloading won't harm the washer. And that pretty much sums up the current state of the appliance industry. It used to be that these things were engineered and built to take abuse. Now? The only washers built that way are from Speed Queen and that's because they are commercial machines without the ability to take your money. SQ only takes your money when you buy it. Yes, today's washers use less water and energy and MAY be better for the environment. But they will cost you more in the long run because you will be replacing it in 1/4 the time your old one lasted.

If I could upvote this 10 times I would. Never buy Samsung anything unless you just have to. Then read up on cognitive bias and tell yourself no. Phones are basically okay, but get a good deal. No glasstops. Consider if you need to wash comforters. I love my simple maytag front loaders for their volume. I think I paid around $1000 for the pair 20 years ago. I replaced the front electronics of the washer and probably need to do a board replacement in my dryer after a move. I will happily replace it with an identical used one.

I have a top loading high efficiency washer (Kenmore 26132). We have a large shedding dog so I usually have to do a prewash and/or the bulky/bedding option with the deep fill to get most of the dog hair out. I have mesh lint catchers to catch extra hair and lint too. If I do a normal cycle, it really doesn't work and I can't do large loads, I have to do small loads or it won't get clean. I also clean the washer every month and I've taken it apart to see if there are any blockages under, and there aren't any problems. It's just not enough water for large loads. I assumed every washer just took at least 90 minutes-2 hours to run so I would do 1-2 loads almost every day for years. Then I stayed at this Airbnb and I was shocked to find this front-loading Samsung washer finished in like 20-30 minutes. Have I been living some lie and is my washer just super slow? It still works perfectly fine, but I'm so sick of having to do laundry every single day just to get through the piles. Or does everyone do laundry every single day? Sometimes I miss my laundromat days when I just spent a couple of hours using multiple machines at a time and getting everything done at once, but I was also younger and had more time.

Samsung appliances are designed to fail - perhaps not deliberately - but the mechanical engineering is generally poor. Having scrapped several supposedly super-premium German appliances early in their lives as a result of "yes I could fix this but the repair cost is the same as a brand new Beko", I no longer bother with them. If you want to go German, Bosch stuff at the higher end is generally well-regarded - but you have to go to either the series 6 or 8 (I can't remember offhand) to get steel drum instead of plastic, assembled in Europe instead of China, etc. I don't believe in long warranties either - yes in theory it covers you, but in practice you wait a long time on hold to arrange an engineer visit in a week's time, while you have kids in the house and laundry to do / food to store / dishes to wash...it just isn't practical, especially when ao will bring you a new almost-anything next-day. The Chinese own-brand stuff - Haier, Midea - is actually decent now BTW. I've had 2 Beko washing machines which lasted 5 years each and were around a third the price of a "good" make. At the first sign of trouble I just scrap + replace. Would probably have got longer but for kids leaving pockets full of tissues/wipes/small plastic that gets through filters.

Buy a mini portable to use in your unit. I have the Haier that I LOVE it's very easy to use and very serviceable. They also have even bigger mini units... I think keeping a shared washer clean is impossible.

As the title says, a sock has become a casualty of my Haier washing machine. I’ve never had this happen before and was curious as to a method to retrieve the sock. I’ve tried the clothes hanger method but to no avail. Is this a common problem and should I be concerned? I have a photo of it and it doesn’t seem to be in a place where it could damage any parts.

We have a 5 yo Haier compact front loader. When we bought it it was either another top loader or a compact front loader to fit the space. Re: “stink” and mold, OP is correct. Take care of your machine and no issues. #1 I clean the filter and do a specified 1-cup of disinfecting bleach Tub Clean cycle monthly. That’s 60 cleaning cycles, with bleach. No Affresh, just bleach like the manual states. #2 I leave the door and detergent tray open when not in use. Simple. It needs air to prevent mold and stink. Zero issues. The front loader uses less water and relies on friction from tumbling. The clothes get wet. It also has a Max spin (extraction) of 1400 rpm. We rarely use the top spin, but even on High it extracts plenty of water which significantly reduces drying time. I’ve had two repairs done, one that probably wasn’t necessary, the other the door hinge inexplicably broke. The tech was surprised that there are no belts, it’s a Direct Drive type of setup. The top loaders today offer an “impeller” or an agitator. I didn’t want anything to do with an impeller. And, based on our last machine, the agitators are cosmetic and designed to fool you into thinking they work like machines of old: there just isn’t enough water in the machine to make the agitator work effectively. On a few rare occasions, most recently a very heavy comforter, our machine is too small for it, so I took it to the laundromat but brought it back damp and dried at home. Our machine is perfect for a couple of empty-nesters. No regrets.
