I ended up in this subreddit while doing some research on laundry detergents. My husband had some skin issues that I suspected were from laundry detergent. After taking all the advice from here and completely overhauling how we do laundry, not only are his skin issues gone, we also got an unexpected bonus — he has waaay less B.O.!! I’m guessing our previous way of doing laundry left some residue on clothes that caused him to stink more. I just wanted to go on here to say thanks and how awesome this subreddit is!! Edit: people asking for old vs new protocols so here they are: Some info: We have a samsung top loader, and our water is very soft. Old protocol: liquid tide or kirkland liquid detergent. Filled to 3rd line for medium loads, 5th line for large loads. Washed on warm for colors; hot for whites, towels, bedding, etc. We always use the heavy soil setting. Rinse twice. A cycle took about 1.5hrs. Everything except towels dried in the dryer on medium-low with 2-3 bounce dryer sheets. Towels dried on high with no dryer sheets. New protocol: For whites/lights we use biz powder + tide clean and gentle powder. About a tablespoon of biz per load and tide powder to line 1 for smaller loads, line 2 for large or extra grimy loads. For darks, we’ve been using mrs. meyers liquid detergent in the basil scent (1-1.5oz)+ 1 tablespoon of active enzyme laundry booster (I just ordered Febu!). Whites, towels, bedding, etc washed with hot water, and warm for everything else. We use a downy ball with citric acid in every wash (about 1-1.5 teaspoons citric acid with a little bit of water). We always use the heavy soil cycle and add the pre-soak function which adds another 20 mins to the cycle. Rinse 3x. Cycle takes about 2.5hrs. Everything except towels dried in the dryer at medium-low with wool dryer balls. Towels dried on high with the wool balls.

It is time for a new fridge. I realize that this isn't literally a 'for life' purchase, but I highly value appliances that don't need service calls more than once or twice a decade and that can be repaired affordably without replacing a $600 motherboard. (You aren't getting my 1990's Kenmore washing machine away from me!) We want an icemaker, but we are willing to forgo the in-door dispenser to limit the moving parts that might cause problems. Bonus points for having a water filter that is not locked to name-brand replacements. Any other tips? Brands to choose or avoid? (I already have a prejudice against phone brands for major appliances. Looking at you, Samsung!) I am generally a fan of Costco. They now carry Midea brand fridges, but I don't know much about them. I am particularly interested in your thoughts there. I settled on the counter-depth version of the LG LRFLS3206S french door fridge. The consensus seems to be that LG is very good as long as you get a rotary compressor and not a linear one, which are bad enough to have inspired multiple lawsuits. It has an ice maker but not dispenser, and a filtered water dispensed inside. (I personally would not have chosen that feature, and might have omitted the ice maker as well, but my husband is worried that he would take up drinking sodas again if cold filtered water wasn't extremely convenient, and the health costs associated with that habit are too great to risk.) The review also recommends a very similar Maytag MRFF4236RZ that was $100 more and too deep for our space, and a GE GNE27JYMFS that was cheaper but requires RFID chipped water filters, which I despise on principle. Fingers crossed that it proves a decent choice.

Hi r/laundry. First time long time. I’ve done the research, I tinkered with the laundry stack. Previously had a top loader with agitator, using tide free and gentle liquid with oxiclean free and downy rinse and refresh. Lipase mafia got to me and I bought into FEBU as the booster to replace the oxiclean free. Also moved into a place with a Samsung top loader (impeller). The clothes have never *looked* cleaner. But I have two new problems: 1. I’ve been doing the washing machine cleaning cycles with citric acid (no foaming, and maybe only 1-2 flakes of scrud in the drum after). But when I’m actually doing loads of laundry with the febu, I’m finding more scrud flakes on the whites. I assume that the FEBU is actually dislodging scrud and I have been hoisted by my own petard there. Annoying, but would love tips for that. 2. My **far** bigger problem is that I am left with clothes that have the spoiled milk smell. Wife works in pastry so chef coats and aprons have likely not been getting as clean and I have now unleashed the fury of years of butter and oil. I upped the dose of tide and went with two scoops of FEBU per suggestions here, but I’m still getting that whiff of vomit. As you can imagine, my little laundry chemistry experiment isn’t going so well at home if the clean clothes all stink. It’s been at least four washes of everything with extra soaking time and extra rinse, but I don’t feel like I’m winning the war. Any guesses?
