“I’ve had two Samsung front loaders (one for 5 years then moved and left it, current for 7 years) and had no problems, it works well. A lot better than the Maytag top loader with the bump style agitator we used before that.”

appliances “What is the best reliable washer/dryer brand?”

Honestly I’d skip Samsung for washers/dryers. Lots of tech but way too many reliability complaints and expensive repairs. GE is a bit better but Speed Queen is pretty much the gold standard for reliability and longevity (they’re built like tanks and last 15+ years). Downside is they’re more expensive and don’t have all the fancy features but you rarely hear about major breakdowns. If that’s out of budget, Whirlpool and Maytag are also solid choices. Easier to get parts and service, and they generally hold up well for 8-10 years if you stick to their basic models. Front loaders usually clean better and are gentler on clothes, but good top loaders like GE or Whirlpool are still a safe bet. LG currently has one of the worst reputations for parts supply and repairability. Samsung is almost as bad. And if you read what Consumer Reports says about their good reliability, they also note that buyers of both makers report big problems when they need repair. The biggest issue seems to be that (in many areas) you can't even get an appointment. This is the situation here in upstate NY. LG and Samsung have not built up their national repair program. Yes, both offer clear savings over domestic brands, but keep in mind that Sam and LG chose not to build out a good national repair system. They rely on existing techs who get paid more by other companies warranty policies. Lord help you if the LG or Sam washer is out of warranty. You are the lowest priority... you'll see them in 3 weeks. Hello laundromat. The other imitations you cite about top loaders could be said about front loaders today. They will die if overloaded, they are made out of plastic parts, and come with a short 1 year warranty. Our old Speed Queen couldn't care less if you overload it. It was designed to not break if you did. With a SQ clothes don't get as clean if you overload, but overloading won't harm the washer. And that pretty much sums up the current state of the appliance industry. It used to be that these things were engineered and built to take abuse. Now? The only washers built that way are from Speed Queen and that's because they are commercial machines without the ability to take your money. SQ only takes your money when you buy it. Yes, today's washers use less water and energy and MAY be better for the environment. But they will cost you more in the long run because you will be replacing it in 1/4 the time your old one lasted.

If I could upvote this 10 times I would. Never buy Samsung anything unless you just have to. Then read up on cognitive bias and tell yourself no. Phones are basically okay, but get a good deal. No glasstops. Consider if you need to wash comforters. I love my simple maytag front loaders for their volume. I think I paid around $1000 for the pair 20 years ago. I replaced the front electronics of the washer and probably need to do a board replacement in my dryer after a move. I will happily replace it with an identical used one.

appliances “How long is a "normal" wash cycle supposed to be (HE washer)? Does everyone wash stuff every day?”

I have a top loading high efficiency washer (Kenmore 26132). We have a large shedding dog so I usually have to do a prewash and/or the bulky/bedding option with the deep fill to get most of the dog hair out. I have mesh lint catchers to catch extra hair and lint too. If I do a normal cycle, it really doesn't work and I can't do large loads, I have to do small loads or it won't get clean. I also clean the washer every month and I've taken it apart to see if there are any blockages under, and there aren't any problems. It's just not enough water for large loads. I assumed every washer just took at least 90 minutes-2 hours to run so I would do 1-2 loads almost every day for years. Then I stayed at this Airbnb and I was shocked to find this front-loading Samsung washer finished in like 20-30 minutes. Have I been living some lie and is my washer just super slow? It still works perfectly fine, but I'm so sick of having to do laundry every single day just to get through the piles. Or does everyone do laundry every single day? Sometimes I miss my laundromat days when I just spent a couple of hours using multiple machines at a time and getting everything done at once, but I was also younger and had more time.

appliances “Washer/Dryer Recommendations needed”

Any recommendations on a Washer, preferably front load, 5 cu ft or more, and gas dryer (unless you think electric is the way to go, since we have solar)? We have LG washer dryer hand me downs when we bought the house. Washer is over 5 cu ft and top load. Previous owners didn’t maintain the appliances, evident of bunch of black junk every time I ran tub clean, various times with some cleaning vinegar, even bottles of the magic clean (separate from vinegar). Nothing worked. Took the damn thing apart, washed the tub outside, cleaned all surfaces inside machine and installed the tub. Turns out the impeller is part of the issue—accumulated black gunk and never comes out bc of the design. Replaced that part, but still smell a weird mildew smell with every wash. I think the tub itself has residual water that never fully drains, just trapped inside. I dont want this junk or anything like it. They also didn’t maintain the dryer, the design of those machines is terrible!! Tons of dust accumulated below the filter and they seem to have never cleaned it. Wtf kind of disgusting people were they? I digress. I just need help picking a new washer/dryer that’s going to work for years to come as long as we take care of them. Online reviews on Costco, Best Buy, Lowe’s, etc have us weary bc it seems all new appliances are garbage. But hoping some of you can chime in with anything you know that’s newer but good quality, long lasting. I don’t care about WiFi Bluetooth or any other nonsense. Just want clean clothes, and reliable machines. We’ve had bad luck with LG and Samsung, and based on the online reviews, not sure those are the best route. Please help!
