Fully Automatic Front Load Washing Machine

Samsung appliances are designed to fail - perhaps not deliberately - but the mechanical engineering is generally poor. Having scrapped several supposedly super-premium German appliances early in their lives as a result of "yes I could fix this but the repair cost is the same as a brand new Beko", I no longer bother with them. If you want to go German, Bosch stuff at the higher end is generally well-regarded - but you have to go to either the series 6 or 8 (I can't remember offhand) to get steel drum instead of plastic, assembled in Europe instead of China, etc. I don't believe in long warranties either - yes in theory it covers you, but in practice you wait a long time on hold to arrange an engineer visit in a week's time, while you have kids in the house and laundry to do / food to store / dishes to wash...it just isn't practical, especially when ao will bring you a new almost-anything next-day. The Chinese own-brand stuff - Haier, Midea - is actually decent now BTW. I've had 2 Beko washing machines which lasted 5 years each and were around a third the price of a "good" make. At the first sign of trouble I just scrap + replace. Would probably have got longer but for kids leaving pockets full of tissues/wipes/small plastic that gets through filters.

Buy a mini portable to use in your unit. I have the Haier that I LOVE it's very easy to use and very serviceable. They also have even bigger mini units... I think keeping a shared washer clean is impossible.

As the title says, a sock has become a casualty of my Haier washing machine. I’ve never had this happen before and was curious as to a method to retrieve the sock. I’ve tried the clothes hanger method but to no avail. Is this a common problem and should I be concerned? I have a photo of it and it doesn’t seem to be in a place where it could damage any parts.

We have a 5 yo Haier compact front loader. When we bought it it was either another top loader or a compact front loader to fit the space. Re: “stink” and mold, OP is correct. Take care of your machine and no issues. #1 I clean the filter and do a specified 1-cup of disinfecting bleach Tub Clean cycle monthly. That’s 60 cleaning cycles, with bleach. No Affresh, just bleach like the manual states. #2 I leave the door and detergent tray open when not in use. Simple. It needs air to prevent mold and stink. Zero issues. The front loader uses less water and relies on friction from tumbling. The clothes get wet. It also has a Max spin (extraction) of 1400 rpm. We rarely use the top spin, but even on High it extracts plenty of water which significantly reduces drying time. I’ve had two repairs done, one that probably wasn’t necessary, the other the door hinge inexplicably broke. The tech was surprised that there are no belts, it’s a Direct Drive type of setup. The top loaders today offer an “impeller” or an agitator. I didn’t want anything to do with an impeller. And, based on our last machine, the agitators are cosmetic and designed to fool you into thinking they work like machines of old: there just isn’t enough water in the machine to make the agitator work effectively. On a few rare occasions, most recently a very heavy comforter, our machine is too small for it, so I took it to the laundromat but brought it back damp and dried at home. Our machine is perfect for a couple of empty-nesters. No regrets.

In Australia I would chose out of 2 routes: a china brand.. Hisense, Haier, because of very good value, also because of your near shipping distance.. or Westinghouse (Electrolux brand)
