Nighthawk R7000 Smart WiFi Router

Like others have already mentioned, unless the Router is receiving updates, then it's time to look into a replacement. OR, change out the firmware from the vendor to an open source project that supports the Router AND is being regularly updated. Checking the most popular firmware replacements I found: [FreshTomato.org](http://FreshTomato.org) : No support for the R7800 model [DD-WRT.com](http://DD-WRT.com) : Supports the R7800, but the last update was back in 2020, so probably no better. [OpenWRT.org](http://OpenWRT.org) : Supports the R7800 model, but does issue some warnings about potential hardware issues. This is the trickiest option and not for the faint-of-heart. You may wish to look into either getting a new Router. OR, purchase a similar model on eBay that has recent support from opensource firmware. I personally have the Netgear R7000 model running FreshTomato firmware that is less than 90 days old. They're on eBay for about $35.

Depends on which nighthawk router. If it's based on the older routers, like the R7000 or newer ones based on the same firmware, those are fine. The firmware was developed by their old software team originally and just updated. I and others have had issues with their modems, granted it's not all their fault as they had newer firmware but Comcast refused to validate and adopt the newer firmware. It's up to the ISP as to which firmware your modem has. You have no control over cable modems. But I had major issues with a $400 network switch I bought from them. Alway random disconnects and reboots. It was awful for such an expensive switch. I had problems with their NAS units, the software is pure garbage. I will never use their junk again.

I have the equivalent of your 92 in another brand, the tri band Gi.Net Flint 3 (BE9600). It also has 5x 2.5G ports & Quad-core cpu besides the 6 Ghz band. One thing I have noticed is that These (BE9600) emphasize throughput on 6 Ghz band (5880 Mbps) not so much on 5 Ghz band but still damn good (2800 Mb). This only matters only if you newer devices that can use the 6 Ghz band. If you have older devices with only 5 Ghz band, the 2 band model may afford you better range and throughput since 5 Ghz gets better range, too. (almost twice that of the BE9600) If you have your router in a separate room, 5 Ghz is the one that will get you fast speeds in the short distance past any walls surrounding the router... 6 Ghz will get greatly attenuated by those walls. But if you have a clear sight between router and devices, aint no speed limit! Haha. In my own testing, on a 1 Gb download service, I achieved about 980 Mb on just wifi (Speedtest on cellphone), at night about 9pm. I have not been able to recreate that speed during the day, no doubt due to interference from neighbors or other things around me. The best i got was 650 or so. My 5 Ghz tablet gets around 550 Mbps or so, about 2.5 rooms over from enclosed router (in office/Den). If you don't have any 6 Ghz devices, you may in for a disappointment in download speeds. I will say that the quad core cpu did seem to speed up my network but it seemed to be slowed when I use the built-in ADGUARD HOME option, but not much of a penalty - I still see download speeds on a wired PC of about 790 Mb or better. Adhuard Home is a plugin that you can turn off. But so is the VPN integration. Here the quad core cpu shines since it speeds up vpn downloads to a max of 680 Mb on Wireguard connections, according to marketting crap. I rarely download on VPN but use it to watch TV from other countries. This router achieves wonderful speeds on Speedtest. Far higher than I had with my old Netgear R7000 (modem/router), where i get well over 500 Mb downloads now on BE9600 but rarely got over 125 Mb on my old Netgear (AC1700). The jump in VPN connection speed alone, has made it invaluable.

I didn't see the issue on a netgear R7000 running FreshTomato either. Its either openWRT as a whole or its specific to certain devices. Until I saw your post I thought it was just a BT8 issue. I wish I had found something of use but like so many of these things I am having a hard time replicating it with a device I have enough control over to debug it.

Hello, I live in a 2 story home that’s about 2,500 sqft. Comporium is the only isp for fiber in my neighborhood but I am not a fan of the plume router they provided. The main device is centrally located on the first floor and the second device is in our home office which is upstairs toward the front of our house above the garage. Overall, internet speed and quality lag at times. Before fiber we had spectrum with a Nighthawk router and never had any issues. When using with one or two devices the internet seems fine, once other stuff gets on the WiFi when everyone is home it slows down significantly. I am not sure if this is attributed to the router or not but just curious. Are there any better mesh system or recommendations you all have? Connected devices include four smart TVs which we rarely are ever using more than two simultaneously, two outdoor security cameras, two phones, one tablet, one laptop and a PS5. Along with a couple other small things i.e. Toniebox, smart watch, etc.
