ZenWiFi AX (XT8) Router

As the title says. Currently using a TP-Link AC1750 and thought that moving flats and the need to reposition my router would be a good opportunity to upgrade a bit and since my workstation also supports 2.5Gbit/s ethernet that would probably be a reasonable target (10Gbit/s is also still a bit expensive?) Router should have probably two 2.5Gbit/s ports, since Gigabit internet connection may actually arrive in the future and the 1x 2.5Gbit/s models seem to have that port as WAN anyway and I at least want one 2.5Gb connection on LAN. I am not really sure about WiFi, is 6GHz already a thing? I think ax is probably enough for the time being? But wouldn't say no to a good option, although I value stability and strong signal/good reception more, especially reception always being a bit of an Achilles heel on my current model. As far as I checked the device table that leaves me with the Flint2 or the Asus ZenWiFi BT8, right? Cool options like the Zyxel T-56 are sadly not available anymore. I would choose the Flint2, but the reports about signal strength going down when flashing OpenWrt worry me. (Flashing OpenWrt is a must for me, even if the Flint2 has already an OpenWrt-based firmware, but I don't want to use that.) Or should I probably defer the upgrade and wait for new options with WiFi7?

Purchased a new construction, during the electrical walkthrough I had our sparky run power and cat 6 to 3 corners of our house, and an inside corner overlooking the driveway. Originally was planning to just buy a Costco special and install 4 camera and some sort of NVR and went down the rabbit hole finding UniFi. Not going to lie, the system names and setup are a bit daunting for someone without an IT background. Thankfully this community and YouTube have been pretty helpful. Basically I’m looking for 4 cameras recording to a NVR for personal monitoring. We live in a great neighborhood in the rural Midwest but occasionally a neighbor will post asking if anyone saw a suspicious car etc. I think I’ve decided on purchasing 4 G6 turrets and probably a UNVR instant, along with a 12tb WD purple. For just basic camera setup is this all I need? I’d debated replacing my home WiFi with a UniFi system but currently my Asus ZenWifi pro X12 has good coverage in my home. I wouldn’t be opposed to changing that in the future if that changes the recommendation for a NVR. If any seasoned UniFi users can let me know if I’m missing anything before I place my order I’d greatly appreciate it! Edit: these will be mounted under the soffit in the corners of the house. We live in ND so brutal winters, moderate wind. There should be a junction box or something in each area to mount them- but with moving I haven’t actually climbed up and taken covers off to see.

There are definitely a few supported WiFi 7 devices. Look here: https://toh.openwrt.org/?features=wifi_be&view=normal My advice: only go with MediaTek devices, and avoid ISP-specific SKUs. That leaves Banana Pi BPI-R4 and ASUS ZenWiFi BT8 as your choices.

I'm using an Asus ZenWiFi BT10 mesh with wireless backhaul, and it works really well. The wireless backhaul uses wifi-7 MLO (despite whether you use MLO for clients or not), and this really ups the wireless backhaul game for a mesh. Very close to as fast as when I used wired backhaul via MoCA. So no, wired backhaul is not necessary to see great speed from your mesh. By the way, no dead zones here, full house wireless coverage using the mesh. We can't really run ethernet cables "all over the house" here due to having no attic and no crawl space...and I don't want to rip the walls and go through all that. Don't feel that I need to with our current solution anyways.

Hi everyone! I have constant issues with my wifi on both my cell phones and my laptop. I live in a rural area with zero cell phone connectivity so our wifi is our lifeline and its fairly critical that it works. As a result my goal is to have wifi working in our large ranch house and in our out buildings and front and back yard. We are lucky enough to get gigabit fiber to our house! When it does work im getting blazing fast speeds 800mbps with low ping. The problem is Wifi will fail to roam quickly from router to router, at times phones (modern devices s25 ultra, etc) and laptops, tvs, tablets cannot connect to the wifi needing multiple device and router restarts for it to work. Somtimes just randomly it throws "incorrect password issues" even though it was connected minutes ago and working switching to failing working. Our house has very thick log walls to outside so penetration from inside to outside is an issue. As a result i put the main router in the window in line of sight of one of the outdoor units. Our house is also a very big ranch home so I had to buy multiple units for wifi coverage, ive run 10gb ethernet to some of the nodes further away while some are using MLO. The maine router is hooked into the fiber ont in the living room. Ethernet runs to a switch and from switch to 3 mesh units kitchen, dining room and guest bedroom. MLO is used for 4 mesh units office, master bedroom, workshop and barn. I plan to run ethernet to all of them but the outdoor ones will require digging. The mesh system shows as great connectivity across the board to the units regardless of ethernet or MLO though I do notice the Ethernet units are faster on speed test. I had to play with my RTS threshold and becon interval to get any level of function across the distances im working with. We also have a heavy use environment with over 80 devices usually connected. Could you pleae take a look at the settings I've attached and point out any issues that may be causing my constant wifi issues? Thanks so much!
