HDR-AS50

Long story short, I shattered & dented my dad's camera lens. it's 100-400 mm, Sony A7 Mark II. I don't know much about cameras, but it seems like only the protector/lens filter was broken. The ISO, Shutter Speed, and Zoom In/Out settings are still fine, but the focus is the only thing that's affected. Can anyone here help me whether I broke the lens or just the filter/protector, can it be fixed and how much does it cost?

Check out the RX0ii from Sony. Can’t really call it an “action cam” as it’s stabilization is terrible, but it is the size of a gopro, with a 40mm focal length and fixed f4 aperture. I got a little cage for mine that allows me to use a vnd filter. The video quality holds up so long as you don’t work it too hard in post. It can also output uncompressed 8bit via micro HDMI. Great for static shots in tight spaces. Honestly where it really shines for me is as a still camera for hiking. While I don’t know the answer to the question and generally speaking the Sony cameras are good at keeping things sorted on the folders, but as Windows and Mac write a bunch of temp or hidden files onto the card it’s always been considered best practice to completely format a card in camera if you have transferred any files so that you don’t run into odd issues with recording. This could be superstition or perhaps legacy workflow but especially if the card is full or close to it I would be formatting in camera before the next shoot day!

I use back button focus with tracking on a Sony A1ii w/the Sony 400-800. I continue to hold the back button focus down while shooting and I seem to lose focus on birds as they leave their perch. Why is it not tracking correctly?

Hello - we are a community TV station with a couple of Sony PXW-Z280 cameras that use SxS cards. We use Catalyst Browse on our editing machines - two Mac Studios - to manage the footage on the cards. A couple of months ago I discovered that deleting clips from the cards in Catalyst Browse no longer frees the space on the card - the camera reports the same amount of free space as it did before the clips were deleted, and I have to format the card entirely to get all of the space back. I thought it was only doing it to the one card that I myself use, but I did some sanity testing today and discovered that it's doing it to all of the cards. Both cameras, both computers. It answers the question of why we've been struggling for space recently. I pulled out a laptop with an old version of Catalyst Browse on it, and it's doing the same thing. The only other thing I can think of is that a couple of months ago I updated all of the Macs to MacOS 14, after staying on 13 for as long as I could. Today I updated one of the Macs to MacOS 26 to see if that changed anything, but the issue persists. Has anyone else encountered this issue? It would appear that until I figure this out, we can only delete clips on the camera itself, which is going to really slow us down.
