Shure SRH840A $145 AKG K612 Pro(used very good) $115 Need new headphones, I mix/produce as a hobby, I like that the AKGs are open back but the reviews seem a little mixed, looking for a professional opinion.

headphoneadvice “High end over ear closed back”

I strongly recommend only using wired passive headphones for production. Bluetooth adds useless noise and that engine plus the DAC and amp and battery stuffed inside the headphone will mean more acoustic compromises. Shure SRH1540 is a good closed back for production. Sony MDR-7506 is the standard. Both are durable enough to use on the go as well, and have a mostly flat/neutral reference frequency response.

I will now throw a curveball. When searching for headphones I got both the K371 and the DT770. I much prefered the K371 sound-wise compared to the DT770. At the end of the day I actually ended up with Shure SRH440 with some modifications, as they sounded the same as the K371 but were half the price. When friends ask me for headphone recommendations I tell them headphones are like shoes. You won't know which are best for you unless you try them yourself.

headphones “Setup complete”

I really love my Neve RNHP Headphone Amplifier and Shure SE846 GEN 2 with the Sensaphonics custom sleeves. It makes almost every source sound better and gives you everything you can get from each one. You can really tell the difference between a USB connection vs a Bluetooth connection, from whatever source you can use. My Topping DX7pro is my favorite source in DAC mode and letting the Neve do all of the amplifying. It is so clear that I never thought I would ever own anything so good.

Honest opinion? The SE215 is a terrible 1DD (1 dynamic driver) IEM and is only slightly better than the bargain bin crap you can get at the dollar store. They were released 15 years ago, well before the Chi-Fi IEM revolution. Today's current crop of IEMs are way, way better than the IEMs from 15 years ago. Shure sells the SE215 for $100. The Moondrop Chu2 is less boomy than the SE215 but runs circles around it for $25. I suggest getting the Chu2, and you'll probably chuck the SE215 once you get them.
