“I recently acquired the AKG K702 and I love em. Outstanding sound, huge sound stage and huge ear pads (they easily encompass my whole ear and I have large Dumbo ears).”

“AKG K371, best tuning in its price bracket. Incredible bass quality, yet mids are clear and treble is sparkly. May not be the most comfy but I got a new headband and earpads otw, so we'll see. Sick of EQing to Harman anyway, these sound great stock.”

“… [truncated] … there's not really a lot of good closed back options for that sound signature. AKG K371 is built terribly and will fail at the hinges at some point, but sounds pretty good. Fiio FT1 is not a technical headphone, it's more of a… [truncated] …”

Yes I finally got the AKG K371, just under 100 bucks used off Amazon. They sound AWESOME, so digging the Harman tuning. The bass is deep and impactful, the mids are smooth and clear, and the highs shimmery and sparkly. I've been listening for two days straight and they're my best sounding pair, despite being one of the cheapest. I'm usually a planar guy, OG Audeze LCD-2, OG HE-400, and Argon mk3. They need loads of EQ, adjusting to Harman target makes them sound much better. Usually 5-10dB bass boost, plus corrections to mids and treble to help with clarity. Only the Argon mk3 can survive without EQ, there's some special mod tuning sauce that I respect. Also have the ZMF Atticus, but that needs sub-bass help, plus more EQ to help with definition and clarity. Only the K371 already sounds great stock, amazing value. So easy to drive too, I'm currently running straight off my DAP. Also runs fine off the 3.5mm out of my FiiO KA13, though need desktop mode. Build quality isn't great, but some compromises are acceptable at this price point. Comfort is okay, I actually find the stock earpads pretty good, but the headband is pretty crappy. But as far as studio headphones go, I think this kills the DT770, as well as my Sony V6. It's probably my last pair, chose over the FiiO FT1, and Dan Clark is too rich for my blood. So happy with these, where have they been all my audiophile life?

headphones “A DAP on the Cheap”
This little rig consists of a Samsung A12 phone I bought back in 2021 for $120, but most any Android phone with USB-C and a way to have enough storage would probably work just fine. Inside it is a Sandisk 256GB microSD card from Amazon for $25 in late 2024. The app is USB Audio Player PRO for $8 off Google Play. This app bypasses the Android audio and routes the music stream straight to USB-C and also has built in Tidal and Qobuz clients. DAC/amp is a Fiio KA11 off Amazon for about $40 at the time. This kit sounds great, and noticeably better than an iPhone 16 Pro using the same KA11. Headphones used for this comparison are AKG K371s. I suspect a dedicated DAP might sound better, but this was about $200 all-in. Only actual issue I see is that the app's Tidal client doesn't have some features that the Tidal app does, like song lyrics, but it has what matters.

Because you value consistency in the FR. I do too, I hate peaks and valleys. Its like I'm expecting certain sounds and they never show up. Try the AKG K371, and many people recommend the Fiio FT1 but I think they have too much bass Alternatively, people also praise the MDR M1 from Sony, which is a direct sequel to your current Sonys

headphoneadvice “Need a good pair of open backs under $200 that aren't too hard to drive.”
I’ve had a pair of akg 7xx and absolutely adore them for gaming, and found the edition xs are great as well for gaming as well. Thing is - the type do headphones you plan on using on your commutes by default won’t be the same ones that do well for gaming. Either pick an okay compromise between the two or pick one that excels better at that specific task.
