Hi, all! I'm trying to stay off my phone in those in-between moments (For me, between classes at university.) I want to find a SUPER small pocket console I can keep with me to fiddle with when I need entertainment for a few minutes. I like the look of the Playdate, but wow, what a price point- and I'm not enough of a gaming nerd to spend that much. I like simple games that have easy controls and aren't complicated to figure out. I'm not too worried about screen size. If there's too many games preloaded, I might get overwhelmed, so keep it simple. Questions and advice are SO appreciated! Thanks, all!

For me personally, I miss the portable only style games. They were often designed for shorter play sessions and just felt like unique smaller scale experiences that experimented in fun ways. I understand why people want portable AAA games, but I just as well rather play those on my TV with a full powered console personally. And I also understand why developing a single game that can play on everything is also ideal for developers vs making bespoke portable games. My Playdate console has thankfully scratched that itch a bit for me, but that’s obviously a super niche device that I can’t recommend to anyone who isn’t immediately interested in it.

I love my steam deck and my playdate. Two very different handhelds that I love because they are Yin and Yang. Don’t sleep on the PD, it really is something unique. I also got a hacked DS cart that has all the games on it. You can do a lot with a little.

handhelds “If you had unlimited money, what would your handheld console combo be?”

I have a Pc with a 4070, a Switch 2 and rog ally x. If I had a vast influx of disposable cash I would probably up grade to an AMD cpu(7800/9800) and a 4090 and I would trade the Ally for an Xbox Ally X. I have had other handheld PC's that I have returned I just like the form factor and interface of the rog ally. That's pretty much all I need with that and my phone I can emulate anything. I do want to get another Playdate console though I regret selling mine.
